5 SEC REVIEW | THE NUN II 2023

THE NUN II

This sequel is a great improvement for both the spin off franchise and for Michael Chaves who directed both "The Curse of La Llorona" and "The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It"!

The new film, with Chaves at the helm, was set four years after the incident at Santa Carta and a year after the events in "Annabelle Creation". I do love how "The Nun II" has ingeniously recreated the character of Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) as a "Demon Hunter" and also the entry of Sister Debra (Storm Reid) as her apprentice, now that Fr. Burke (Demian Bichir) has passed away.

The film also showed how Sister Irene has gifts that are similar to Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) which I think will become more significant as the story progresses towards "The Conjuring" tie-up.

I also love how this franchise is introducing another religious relic. The first movie showed audience the power of the "blood of christ". In The Nun II, Sister Irene and Sister Debra is seen in an exhilirating race against the Demon Valak for the possession of "The Eyes of Saint Lucy". This has set the tone of the franchise to not rival The Conjuring in the hard core "jump scare" horror genre but instead went in the direction of near the borderline of fantasy-adventure. But even so, the scare factor of The Nun II is not to be taken lightly. There were a lot of scenes in the film that'll really shivers down your spine.

The Nun II also brings back Maurice "Frenchie" (Jonas Bloquet) as the unwilling conduit for the Demon Valak. Also introduced are the characters of Kate (Anna Popplewell) and her daughter Sophie (Katelyn Rose Downey) and other amazing character and actors.

Unfortunately though, I am guessing that the third "The Nun" film (and I am sure that there will be a third) is going to be the final film to tie the spin off with the events of The Conjuring series as revealed also during end credit teaser with the Warrens being called to finally come face the Demon Valak for the first time and in their failed exorcism of Maurice.

But I think the franchise could continue even with the absense of Valak in the story. Since "The Nun" may also be attributed to Sister Irene as the Demon Hunter Nun. They could actually produce a series about this if they wanted to. Sister Irene could be the "Buffy" of the Demon world. Just Saying.
