5 SEC REVIEW | NOVOCAINE 2025
Jack Quaid \ Amber Midthunder \ Jacob Batalon
NOVOCAINE 2025 is a delayed-release epinephrine!
Directed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, this movie starts on a slow pace and then suddenly throws us into a chaotic blend of action and dark comedy, anchored by a unique premise (or medical condition).
Jack Quaid delivers a standout performance as Nathan Caine, a man with congenital insensitivity to pain (CIPA). This condition, while seemingly a "superpower," presents its own set of bizarre and often hilarious challenges to his everyday life. When his colleague and love interest, Sherry (Amber Midthunder), is kidnapped during a bank robbery, Nathan's unique condition propels him into a perilous rescue mission.
The concept of a protagonist who can't feel pain opens the door for some incredibly creative and over-the-top action sequences. The film definitely embraces the absurdity of this. "Novocaine" successfully walks a tightrope between dark comedy and visceral action. It's a film that doesn't shy away from the gruesome, but also knows how to land a joke. The action scenes are inventive and well-executed.
However, the film occasionally stretches credibility, even within its already heightened reality. Some viewers might find the plot a bit too loose because of this.
NOVOCAINE is a fun, if somewhat uneven, ride. It's a film that prioritizes entertainment, and in that regard, it largely succeeds. If you're looking for a movie that's willing to get weird and deliver some memorable action, this one's worth a watch.
