Social media are interactive platforms and applications that facilitate communication, community building, and content sharing among users. In essence, social media has transformed how people communicate, share information, and interact with each other on a global scale.
I guess the goal was to make it easy for everyone all around the world to communicate with each other, create borderless communities and share relevant information. CREATE POSITIVE CHANGE!
However, and like with most tools, it can be used as a force for good or as an instrument for evil. It all depends on the one who uses it. And there has never been a tool more powerful and more accessible than social media. It's like giving an unlicensed, loaded gun to a toddler. Or handing a vial of T-Virus to a clumsy little child.
It is UNFORTUNATE that with its amazing power to spread goodwill all over the world, most would just utilize it to spread misinformation, political agendas, and unkindness. Imagine your walls and newsfeeds flooded with hatred and fake news, from the moment you wake up and until you retire for the day! This is the kind of torture our minds get every single day, and we don't notice it because it's now the norm.
It may feel that as adults, we don't really have any choice, because most of the important things we do like work or studies are now dependent on it. But our kids, we can give them better options.
I would advise the educational system to not encourage its use as a tool for teaching the young. Exposing them early to such negativities can be detrimental and unhealthy - better stick to books and workbooks.
There's no way to censor the idiots of social media and we can't just tell them to STFU - that won't work. What we can do however is to educate the young people and hope that they'll be the ones to change how social media is used in the future. The only way to fight wildfire is with fire.
